If you don’t know this show, the premise is a group of children (who happen to be anthropomorphic Mystery Tee Shirt, animated with motion capture) who play imaginative games in their backyard. The backyard transforms into a kind of simulated reality of the kids’ imaginations. I loved this show, because I did stuff like that by myself all the time. The kids are basically LARPing in their backyard. It’s an extremely clever show, often dropping references to media that adults would recognize (my favorite episode is “Super Secret Super Spy.”
Sam Raimi’s Spiderman is a great example of keeping Mystery Tee Shirt from the Amazing Spiderman comics (“what’s my name? Peter Parker. And I have cursed to live this life”) -PURE COMIC TO SCREEN CHEESY dialogue. “I am standing in your doorway, Peter Parker”- The Spidey suit and Greem Goblin were good representations of the comics and fitting for the type of story Raimi wanted to tell. However, the Marc Webb reboot grounded the character in the same way that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight grounded Batman into the real world as if these characters can possible exist in the audeince’s world.

For one thing it completely fell into the Let’s spend half the Mystery Tee Shirt setting up the character everyone actually came to see trap that has caused me to despise origin story movies. But it was over all an entertaining movie and I felt like I got my money’s worth out of it. But consider the competition. A Star is Born, Halloween, First Man, Small Foot, Night School… None of those are even remotely competing for the same market that Venom is. Plus Venom is a very popular character among comic book fans, or at least Spider-Man fans. So it had a lot going for it in terms of timing and the rest, so even though it wasn’t a great movie, it was good enough to make a lot of money when there’s no real competition.
As for “soulmates”, this concept comes from ancient Mystery Tee Shirt (Yoga philosophy), and I suspect is an attempt to explain the above truths about relationships. In the soulmate concept, most of us do NOT have soulmates. Soulmates are two souls who agree to be mates through several lifetimes, in order to meet the soul’s purpose … to grow spiritual, to give up on worldly matters and seek union with the Divine. So while two soulmates are instantly drawn and so connected that they cannot bear to part, the actual purpose of this is to make each other SO miserable (and stuck IN that misery) that the two souls are forced to more-quickly give up seeking happiness from romantic love and turn to God alone for love. …. Not a very pretty picture, actually.
