Anyway, a lot of that stuff just bugged me.

I’d have to know about their training and background, and I’d still very likely decide to home school. I would, naturally, prefer to avoid putting my child in a situation like this. Shootings have gone from being the occasional tragedy to being commonplace. That isn’t acceptable to me. It would be worth any sacrifice to see that this particular risk is avoided. My husband and I, between us and with resources at our disposal, can offer a child a very good multilingual home education and also arrange for regular social contact. The argument that public government buildings, etc. are protected by people with guns carries no weight with me. Two sheriff deputies in Kansas were recently shot and killed by a prisoner during an otherwise routine transport. Teachers, no matter what their background, will not have the training, experience, or judgment of a professional, and even professionals are vulnerable. I’m unpersuaded that more guns in more hands is the answer.

I’m Vietnamese who is studying in Australia, I’ve never been offended neither do my Vietnamese friends. Actually we always say happy Chinese new year to other non vietnamese people, especially on facebook and to vietnamese born in Australia Actually I’ve never thought about it until I heard some people get offended. I’ve never attached Chinese New Year with being exclusively Chinese so I never felt left out. Here in Australia Chinese and Koreans also join our Tet festival and Vietnamese and Koreans join Chinese New Year parade. I hate to think because of some sensitive people there are ethnic tension over this festival. I think if Im in a foreign country with no Vietnamese people I would be very happy to see Chinese during this time because they are celebrating the same festival as us And would have no problem joining their Chinese New Year celebration or calling it Chinese New Year.

I always feel like facepalming with this comment. In fact, those people celebrating Chinese New Year in Southeast Asia are ethnic Chinese people. There are large Chinese communities in southeast Asia. Again, besides the Chinese, only Vietnamese and Koreans celebrate the Chinese New Year. Next time when a Vietnamese point to you that Thai and Malaysians also celebrate Lunar New Year, kindly remind them that those are ethnic Chinese. And kindly remind them also that the majority of Singaporeans are ethnic Chinese.
